Retaining Wall Construction — Kingsport, Johnson City & Bristol, TN
Northeast Tennessee’s terrain doesn’t give you flat yards for free. Rolling lots, steep slopes, and hillside properties throughout the Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol area often need retaining walls to make outdoor space usable, protect foundations from soil movement, and keep landscaping from washing down the hill. Hudson Stoneworks & Masonry designs and builds retaining walls that hold — engineered for the load they carry and built with materials that won’t need replacing in five years.
Retaining Wall Services We Provide
We work with a range of materials and wall types depending on height, soil conditions, load requirements, and the look you want:
- Natural stone retaining walls — dry-stacked or mortared fieldstone and cut stone walls that blend into the landscape and last generations
- Concrete block retaining walls — Allan Block, Versa-Lok, and similar segmental retaining wall systems for larger walls requiring engineered drainage and geogrid reinforcement
- Brick retaining walls — mortared brick walls for decorative garden beds, terraces, and lower-height landscape features
- Poured concrete walls — for basement and below-grade applications where maximum strength and waterproofing matter most
- Terraced wall systems — multiple stepped walls to manage long slopes without putting all the load on a single tall wall
- Retaining wall repair — rebuilding failed or leaning walls, installing drainage improvements, and addressing root damage
Why Retaining Walls Fail — and How We Build to Prevent It
Most retaining wall failures come down to one of two problems: inadequate drainage or undersized construction. Water that can’t escape builds up hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and pushes it over — this is the number one cause of wall failure in our region. We install properly sized drainage stone backfill and perforated pipe on every wall that needs it, so water has somewhere to go that isn’t through your wall.
Height matters too. A wall over 4 feet tall in Tennessee typically requires a permit and an engineered design — we’re familiar with local requirements across Sullivan and Washington counties and can guide you through that process if it applies to your project.
We build retaining walls across the Tri-Cities region including Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol, Blountville, Bluff City, Gray, Church Hill, Rogersville, Mount Carmel, Duffield VA, and Gate City VA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Kingsport or Johnson City?
In most Tri-Cities jurisdictions, retaining walls under 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall can be built without a permit. Walls 4 feet and taller typically require a building permit and in many cases a stamped engineering plan. We work with local permit offices regularly and can walk you through what’s required for your specific project and location.
How long does a stone retaining wall last?
A properly built mortared stone or block retaining wall with correct drainage should last 40 to 75 years or more. Dry-stacked natural stone walls, when built with proper batter (backward lean into the slope) and good drainage, can outlast that. The variables that shorten wall life are poor drainage, tree roots growing through the base, and freeze-thaw damage from water trapped in voids — all things we account for in our construction approach.
Can you match the stone on an existing wall that needs to be extended or repaired?
We do our best to match or closely complement existing stone. Tennessee fieldstone, sandstone, and limestone are locally available and we have access to multiple suppliers. For older walls with weathered stone, a perfect match isn’t always possible — but we can usually get close enough that the repair or addition reads as intentional rather than patched.
